Reimbursement Netherlands

Check cost estimate, policy, contract status, patient contribution, deductible and any permission.

Short answer for 2026: Completely removable dentures are covered by basic insurance in the Netherlands. You usually pay a 25% statutory patient contribution. Your deductible can also be settled on the part that subsequently comes from the basic insurance. Different rules apply to a partial plate or frame prosthesis.

What is reimbursed in the Netherlands?

The reimbursement depends on the type of facility, your policy, our contract status, any authorization and how much deductible you have already used this year. The percentages below are the main legal rules for adults in 2026.

75%

Complete dentures

The basic insurance reimburses 75% of the amount accepted by the insurer. You pay a 25% statutory patient contribution. The deductible may also apply.

90%

Implant-retained removable denture lower jaw

For approved complete dentures on implants, the statutory patient contribution for the prosthesis is 10%. Prior permission is usually required for the process.

92%

Implant-retained removable denture upper jaw

For approved complete dentures on implants, the statutory patient contribution for the prosthesis is 8%. Here too, medical conditions apply and usually an authorization.

90%

Repair or relining

For repairs or relining of complete dentures, you pay a 10% statutory patient contribution. The deductible may also apply.

Full, partial, frame or implants: the difference

Treatment Basic insurance for adults What to look out for
Fully removable dentures Yes, under conditions. Statutory patient contribution 25%. Deductible, contract status, accepted rate and any policy conditions.
Immediate/emergency dentures after extraction The complete denture can fall under the same general rule. Tooth extraction is a separate treatment and is usually not reimbursed by basic insurance for adults.
Plate prosthesis or frame prosthesis Usually not covered by basic insurance from the age of 18. A supplementary dental insurance policy can reimburse part of the costs, often up to an annual maximum and according to its own conditions.
Implant-retained removable dentures on implants Possible in the case of a severely shrunken, completely toothless jaw when a normal prosthesis does not function sufficiently. Medical assessment and usually prior consent. The implantological and dental prosthetic parts can be billed by different healthcare providers.
Implant for one or several missing teeth Usually not covered by basic insurance for adults. Possible only with special dental care or additional insurance. Request written confirmation in advance.
Repair or relining of complete dentures Yes, usually 90% of the accepted amount. 10% statutory patient contribution and possible deductible. Aftercare or warranty may play a role in a recently fitted prosthesis.

Patient contribution and deductible are two separate amounts

1. Statutory patient contribution

This is the part of a certain treatment that you pay yourself according to the law. For complete dentures this is 25%. This contribution is calculated first.

2. Mandatory deductible

The mandatory deductible is €385 for adults in 2026. The part that is reimbursed from the basic insurance after the patient contribution can be offset against your outstanding deductible.

3. Voluntary deductible

Have you voluntarily opted for a higher deductible? Then a maximum of €500 can apply on top of the mandatory €385. Your total deductible may therefore be €885.

Calculation example 2026

Complete dentures of €1,200

Accepted charges
€1.200
25% patient contribution
€300
Remaining amount for basic health insurance
€900
Deductible still fully open
€385
In this example, pay yourself
€685
Insurer pays
€515

This official calculation principle is an example, not a quote. If your deductible has already been partly used, the accepted rate is different or you have a voluntary deductible, the outcome will change.

When is prior approval required?

An authorization is not always required for normal fully removable dentures. Prior permission is often required for implants and implant-retained removable dentures, early replacement, special dentistry or certain non-contracted care. The exact conditions vary per insurer and policy.

Don't just start based on a telephone commitment. If in doubt, ask your insurer for written confirmation stating the amount reimbursed, your patient contribution, the consequences of the deductible and the validity period of the permission.

Contracted or non-contracted

Van Hoften Tandprothetiek can treat you regardless of which Dutch health insurer you are insured with. This does not automatically mean that every policy reimburses the same amount. With a non-contracted care provider, your insurer may charge a lower reimbursement or impose additional conditions.

View our contract status per insurer

This is how you avoid surprises

  1. Have your oral situation assessed. Only then will it be clear whether it concerns a complete denture, partial denture, repair, implant-retained removable denture or combined process.
  2. Request a written cost estimate. With a combined process you can receive separate cost estimates from Van Hoften Tandprothetiek and Implant Company.
  3. Check your policy and contract status. Ask what rate the insurer accepts and whether additional insurance will be included.
  4. Check permission and deductible. Ask whether an authorization is necessary and how much deductible is still outstanding.
  5. Request written confirmation. Save the cost estimate, authorization and response from your insurer.
  6. Start when the costs are clear. We are happy to explain our cost estimate, but your insurer will make the final reimbursement decision.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much do dentures cost in the Netherlands?

The total costs depend on the type of dentures, the treatment and the rate accepted by your health insurer. For fully removable dentures, basic insurance generally reimburses 75% and you pay a 25% statutory patient contribution; in addition, the deductible may apply. You will receive a personal cost estimate from us in advance.

Are partial dentures or frames reimbursed?

For adults, a plate prosthesis or frame prosthesis is usually not covered by basic insurance. Additional dental insurance can reimburse a percentage, often with a maximum per calendar year. Also check waiting times and acceptance conditions.

Will my tooth extraction be reimbursed?

The extraction of teeth and molars by a dentist or implantologist is usually not reimbursed by basic insurance for adults. Additional dental insurance can sometimes pay part of the costs. The extractions and immediate dentures can therefore be included in separate cost estimates and invoices.

Does the deductible also apply if I pay a 25% patient contribution?

Yes. First, the statutory patient contribution is calculated. The outstanding deductible can then be offset against the part that comes from the basic insurance.

Can Van Hoften Tandprothetiek guarantee my reimbursement?

No. We can explain your treatment, provide a cost estimate and confirm our contract status. Only your health insurer can determine the final amount based on your policy, authorization and deductible already used.

Who bills for implant treatment?

Van Hoften Tandprothetiek bills the dental prosthetic part. Implant Company is an independent healthcare provider and bills the implantological or surgical part through its own administration. Therefore, check the name of the healthcare provider on every cost estimate and invoice.
