What is a frame prosthesis?
A frame prosthesis consists of a metal base with plastic gums and replacement teeth. The frame also rests on your own teeth and can be attached visibly or less visibly with anchors. Which shape is possible depends on the condition and position of the remaining teeth, your bite, cleanability and aesthetic wishes.
Examination and collaboration
The remaining teeth should be carefully assessed first. Treatment of caries, gum problems or other complaints may be necessary in advance. Where necessary, we work together with or upon referral from your dentist. You will receive an explanation of benefits, limitations, maintenance, alternatives and costs before you decide.
Would you rather not have a metal frame? In a suitable oral situation, our fully milled acetal denture can be considered as an interim solution. Compare acetal with plate and frame prosthesis.
The possible contact moments
- Introduction (intake): discuss wishes, oral situation, health, expectations and costs.
- First impression or scan: create an initial registration as a basis for the treatment design.
- Final impression or scan, if needed: accurately register the mouth for the final fit.
- Bite registration, if necessary: record the position, height, and mutual relationship of the jaws.
- Try-in, if needed: check shape, position, bite and appearance together and adjust if necessary.
- Fitting: place the definitive prosthesis, check it and provide maintenance explanations.
- Aftercare: guide adjustment, assess pressure points and adjust if necessary.
The precise route and number of appointments may differ per patient.
Aftercare
After placement, adjustment may be required. A pressure spot, pain, a sharp edge or problems with eating and speaking are reasons to contact us. Do not adjust the prosthesis yourself.
Costs and reimbursement
You will receive a written cost estimate in advance. The final reimbursement depends on your insurance or health insurance fund, policy conditions, contracting, patient contribution, deductible and any prior permission. If in doubt, always ask for written confirmation.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many appointments are needed?
This varies per oral situation and method. Not every patient needs a definitive impression, bite assessment or fitting.
Do I know in advance what it costs?
You will receive a cost estimate in advance. Check the possible reimbursement with your insurer or health insurance fund.
Can I still contact you after fitting?
Yes. Aftercare and assessment are part of the guidance.
Costs and reimbursement
What is reimbursed in this situation?
The explanation below is general. Your treatment, billing codes and insurance conditions determine the final reimbursement.
Netherlands
A frame prosthesis for adults is generally not reimbursed by Dutch basic insurance. Additional dental insurance may reimburse part of the costs, but the maximum amount and percentage differ per policy.
Ask in advance whether the metal frame construction, technology and material costs are included in your package.
Belgium
Different rules apply in Belgium for a frame prosthesis than for a normal plastic plate prosthesis. Statutory and additional reimbursement depends, among other things, on the facility and your health insurance company.
When receiving treatment in the Netherlands, always request written confirmation in advance based on our cost estimate.
