A term is not an expiration date
A denture does not automatically need replacing once an insurance reimbursement period ends. Conversely, an earlier examination may be needed if the denture fits or functions poorly. We therefore always assess your mouth, the fit, bite, wear and symptoms.
Emergency or immediate prosthesis: how long do you wear it?
An immediate denture is made before extraction and placed immediately after the removal of the last teeth. The jaw and gums change the most in the first three months to about six months. The hard prosthesis does not change and can therefore become looser. Temporary adjustment, a soft lining or later relining may be necessary.
There is no fixed medical day on which you can no longer wear this prosthesis. As long as the prosthesis is safe, comfortable and usable, it can be worn with checks and adjustments. Around a year after extraction, it is often reassessed whether further adjustment is sufficient or whether a new, more definitive prosthesis is wise. That moment differs per person.
Reimbursement terms in the Netherlands
Five years at a glance
The five-year term concerns reimbursement and consent. Medically, we always look at fit, function, wear and the health of your mouth.
New dentures
Getting used to, aftercare and checking whether the teeth are functioning properly.
Check and maintain
Adjust, reline or repair as necessary. Replacement earlier is sometimes possible, but usually only after permission.
Moment for assessment
Replacement may be possible
With many insurers, permission is no longer required due to the term. There must still be a health care reason.
Do not replace automatically. Five years does not mean that your dentures are “used up” or that you are automatically entitled to new teeth. We first investigate whether replacement is necessary and check the conditions of your insurer.
- Temporary complete dentures (P023): Some insurers allow replacement with more permanent teeth from six months onwards without prior authorization. This is not a general medical rule and the policy conditions of your own insurer remain decisive.
- Final complete denture: Health insurers generally apply a term of five years. Replacement within five years usually requires prior permission with a substantiated treatment plan.
- After five years: you do not automatically need new dentures. First it is assessed whether replacement is necessary and whether adjustment, relining or repair is still appropriate.
- Plate and frame prosthesis: Different reimbursement rules apply for this than for complete dentures. The five-year term from the basic insurance cannot therefore simply be applied.
Belgian patients
For the Belgian statutory reimbursement of removable dental prostheses, one prosthesis per jaw per period of seven calendar years generally applies. In special situations, an earlier renewal can be requested. Before treatment in the Netherlands, have your health insurance company confirm in writing which reimbursement, permission and documents apply to you.
Signs that you need an earlier check-up
- The prosthesis is becoming increasingly loose or pinching.
- You develop recurring pressure sores or wounds.
- Eating or speaking becomes more difficult.
- Teeth or plastic are badly worn, discolored or damaged.
- Your facial support or bite has changed.
- The prosthesis breaks repeatedly or you need more and more adhesive.
After examination, we discuss whether maintenance, adjustment, relining, repair or replacement makes sense.

Costs and reimbursement
You will receive a written cost estimate in advance. The final reimbursement depends on your insurance or health insurance fund, policy conditions, contracting, patient contribution, deductible and any prior permission. If in doubt, always ask for written confirmation.
