Are you unsure about the fit of your dentures, a proposed treatment or the options that have been explained to you? During an independent assessment, we first listen to your story and then look at what makes sense in your situation.
Not to prove anyone wrong, but to give you clarity
A second opinion is a second, professional assessment. The goal is for you to better understand what may be going on, what options are available and what next step suits you. Sometimes the assessment confirms the existing advice; sometimes other possibilities emerge.
Your prosthesis is causing complaints
Consider looseness, pressure points, pain, gagging, difficulty chewing or speaking, fracture, wear or a changed bite.
You are unsure about the proposal
You want to know whether repair, relining, replacement, a frame, acetal solution or implant-supported prosthesis may be appropriate.
You lack explanation or confidence
You want to hear the treatment process, the risks, the costs, the reimbursement or the expected outcome again in understandable language.
From your question to clear advice
An initial conversation may be sufficient. Sometimes additional information, a scan, impression, x-ray or assessment by a dentist, implantologist or oral and maxillofacial surgeon is required before definitive advice is possible.
An oral initial assessment is different from a formal written second opinion
Not every question requires an extensive report. That is why we discuss in advance what you need, who the advice is for and how much examination is required.
First intake: free
During the intake we listen to your story, take a global look at your situation and explain what next steps are possible. As long as we do not perform any additional procedure or treatment, there are no costs associated with this initial intake.
The oral explanation during this appointment is not a formal written expert report.
What are you taking with you?
- Your current prosthesis, even if it is damaged or no longer worn.
- A valid ID and your insurance or health insurance fund details.
- Your treatment proposal, cost estimate, authorization or rejection if you have one.
- Relevant letters, X-rays, scans or data from previous practitioners.
- A current medication list from the pharmacy and important medical information.
- Your questions, preferably written down in advance so that nothing is forgotten.
A second opinion does not automatically mean a new prosthesis
The current advice may be correct
A second assessment may confirm that the proposed treatment is a good or necessary route.
A small step can be enough
Sometimes checking, getting used to, aftercare, adjustment or relining makes more sense than immediate replacement.
Consultation may be necessary
If you have your own teeth, implants, mucous membrane abnormalities or medical questions, we will involve the appropriate qualified healthcare provider.
You will receive clarity in advance
Intake, NZa code and insurance
The first consultation at Van Hoften Tandprothetiek is free provided no additional procedure or treatment is carried out during that appointment. NZa code C011 may apply to a formal written second opinion. The maximum fee in 2026 is €135.03 and includes the comprehensive assessment and the preparation and discussion of the written opinion, regardless of the number of appointments.
Ask your health insurer in advance whether a referral or permission is required. In the case of your own teeth, molars, roots or implants, consultation with a dentist, implantologist or other qualified healthcare provider may also be necessary. Your health insurer ultimately determines whether and under what conditions reimbursement applies, including patient contribution and deductible.
Belgian health insurance funds and reimbursement rules
We also start with a free intake for patients from Belgian Limburg as long as no additional procedure or treatment is performed. A formal written second opinion, file examination and reporting are not included in the free intake and are estimated in advance with you.
Whether an examination, advice, report or subsequent treatment is reimbursed depends on the Belgian nomenclature, your insurability, any age and renewal periods, the prescription and the conditions of your health insurance fund or supplementary insurance. Ask your health insurance company in advance for personal confirmation. We can provide a cost estimate and treatment details, but do not decide on reimbursement.
You might want to know this first
Do I have to inform my current practitioner in advance?
You may first speak to us without obligation. Information from your practitioner may be required for a well-founded assessment. We only request this with your permission. In the event of an ongoing repair, warranty or complaint process, it is usually wise to first give your current practitioner the opportunity to respond or repair.
Is a written second opinion included in the free intake?
No. The free intake is intended to get acquainted, discuss your question and determine which assessment is necessary. NZa code C011 may apply in the Netherlands for a formal extensive investigation with a written assessment. The maximum rate in 2026 is €135.03, regardless of the number of sessions. The performance includes the examination and making and discussing the written assessment. We will explain in advance whether this code applies to your situation and your insurer will determine any reimbursement.
Will you automatically take over my treatment?
No. A second opinion is first an assessment. You then decide what to do with the advice. Taking over an ongoing process only happens when this is careful, feasible and responsible and the costs and responsibilities are clear.
Am I always offered a different solution?
No. An independent assessment can also confirm that the previous advice is appropriate. We do not promise a specific outcome, but we do promise an honest explanation of what we can assess.
Can I have implant-retained removable dentures or partial dentures?
Yes, for an initial assessment. Because implants, roots or your own teeth may be involved, information or a referral from a dentist, implantologist or oral and maxillofacial surgeon may be required before treatment can start.
What if I am particularly dissatisfied with communication?
That is a valid reason to ask for an explanation. We listen to what you are missing and help organize your questions. In the event of a complaint, it remains important to first give the original healthcare provider the opportunity to find a solution together.
Can I switch to your practice after the second opinion?
That is sometimes possible, but a second opinion does not automatically mean that we will take over an ongoing treatment process. First, responsibilities, file information, any warranty, authorization and costs must be clear. Read how switching to our practice is done carefully.
Always check rates and reimbursement for your own situation
The stated Dutch performance code and maximum rate apply for calendar year 2026. NZa rates can change annually. A performance code does not automatically give the right to reimbursement; Your health insurer or health insurance fund will assess this on the basis of your personal insurance and the applicable conditions.
